Building Knowledge, Literacy, and Curiosity

At our school, we believe strong readers become strong thinkers and lifelong learners when they gain knowledge about the world.

That's why we use Core Knowledge, an approach to coherent, content-rich instruction built on a powerful, cognitive-science-backed idea: the more students know, the more they can learn.

📖

Stronger Reading & Writing

through rich background knowledge and academic vocabulary

🔗

Meaningful Learning

that connects reading, writing, science, history and geography, and the arts

📈

Coherent Learning

that builds from year to year instead of isolated topics

💡

Curiosity & Confidence

as students explore the people, places, ideas, and discoveries that have shaped our world

“General reading comprehension ability requires a definite range of general knowledge.” — E. D. Hirsch, Jr., The Knowledge Deficit (2006)
For Students

What This Means for Students

At our school, we believe strong readers become strong thinkers and lifelong learners when they gain knowledge about the world.

Core Knowledge brings that understanding into the classroom. As students learn about literature, history and geography, science, and the arts, they build the background knowledge that fuels future learning. Each grade builds intentionally on the last, helping students form connections across subjects — connections that deepen over time.

For Families

How Families Can Help

Talk About Learning

Ask what your child is learning about in school. Encourage them to explain new ideas and make connections to everyday life. Talking about what your child is studying strengthens understanding and helps knowledge stick.

Explore the Core Knowledge Sequence

Download the free Core Knowledge Sequence at www.coreknowledge.org. It shows what your child will learn in each subject at every grade level, so you can see how knowledge builds logically from one year to the next.

Visit and Explore

Visit museums, historical sites, parks, libraries, and other local places that connect to the topics your child is studying.

Core Knowledge Free Library

Explore the Core Knowledge Free Library at www.coreknowledgefreelibrary.org for engaging read-alouds, audiobooks, and independent reads, all available at no cost.

Family Resource

The Core Knowledge Free Library
